Vetch at Roke

The Friendly East-Reacher The Art of Kindness Vetch, a dark-skinned boy from Iffish, was Ged's first friend at Roke. He was plain, good-natured, and skilled in the lesser arts. He tried to mediate between Ged and Jasper. The Gift of the True Name When Vetch left Roke, he gave Ged the gift of his true name, Estarriol, and asked him to come to the East Reach. This act of trust restored Ged's hope.

Vetch as Wizard of Iffish

The Prosperous Wizard The Reunion Vetch had become the chief wizard of Iffish, living in his family home. He was happy to see Ged, but also alarmed by the shadow's imitation of Ged. He insisted on joining the quest. The Voyage East Vetch sailed with Ged on Lookfar, providing companionship and moral support. He was a steady presence, even when his own power waned on the Open Sea.

Witness to the Final Confrontation

The Witness The Terror and the Joy Vetch saw Ged walk into the dark land and face the shadow. He saw the light and darkness merge, and then the world restored.
